Call for Australia’s first Minister for Men’s Health

MensLine Australia online counselling expansion

MensLine Australia announced today that from Monday 19 December they will be expanding its free online counselling service, following an overwhelmingly successful nine month pilot program.

New Suicide Statistics Affirm the Need for Professional Services

Crisis Support Services Inc (CSS), provider of the national Suicide Call Back Service and SuicideLine Victoria, have said that the latest figures on suicide in Australia are no surprise. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2009 – Causes of Death data) suicide remains the 14th leading cause of death in Australia, with 2132 Australians taking their own lives in 2009.
 
CSS’ Clinical Services GM, Mr Christopher Groot said that the new figures simply reaffirmed the need for professionally staffed, 24 hour support services for people at risk of suicide, their carers and those who have lost a loved one to suicide.

Top Blokes Talk Over Men's Health

On Friday November 12, MensLine Australia will bring together more than 175 Victorian business leaders to join forces in tackling the big issues affecting men’s health and wellbeing at the 2010 Top Blokes Talk Business Luncheon.

To be held at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium, the business luncheon will focus on protecting the health and wellbeing of men in the workplace, with insights from speakers like Tim Mathieson (men’s health ambassador and partner to Australia’s Prime Minister), TV doctor - Dr Andrew Rochford, and psychologist and Chair of Crisis Support Services - Dr Nicholas Voudouris.

Dads' Suicide Risk Skyrockets when Separated from their Children

As Father’s Day approaches, MensLine Australia has uncovered men living without their children are five times more likely to have attempted suicide, as compared to fathers who are living with their children.

The extreme isolation and emotional pain many men feel is evident when they reach out for help and contact MensLine Australia. Highlighted by an analysis of the 50,000 callers who ring MensLine Australia each year, fathers living alone are also twice as likely to have experienced a serious mental health concern and three times more likely to be suicidal when calling the professional telephone counselling service.
